Adventure Activities
Africa is positively brimming with adventure. Nothing can beat the surges of adrenaline when coming face to face with the big game of Africa in their natural environment. Being surrounded by a herd of African elephant while sitting in an open vehicle in the bush, a 4 x 4 adventure over the vast dunes of the Namib Desert, white water rafting through the swirling rapids below the mighty Victoria Falls or canoeing on the great rivers of Africa where elephant, hippo, and crocodile abound. These are just a few of the incredible experiences that one can experience here on this great continent of Africa.
Bungi Jumping – Bloukrans Bridge near Natures Valley in the Western Cape is the highest in South Africa at 216 meters (708 feet) Another incredible jump is off the Victoria Falls Bridge. At 111 meters ( 364 feet), it is not the highest jump but the free fall towards the Great Zambezi River with the Victoria Falls as a backdrop makes this an incredible experience.
White Water Rafting – the rapids in the Batoka Gorge below the Victoria Falls are considered to be the best one day rafting experience in the world. Names like Stairway to Heaven, The Terminator, The Washing Machine, Judgement Day, Devils Toilet Bowl and Oblivion, give you an insight as to what to expect. The rapids are directly influenced by the rainfall and generally run from August to late December when the Zambezi river is low.
Canoe and Mokoro Safaris – A guided canoe trip on the Zambezi River is a wonderful way to get close to nature. You may pass pods of hippo and crocodiles lazing on the shore. In the Okavango Delta in Botswana, a mokoro safari takes you through the meandering channels and lagoons past water lilies and exotic birdlife. A perfect way to experience this pristine wilderness.
Deep Sea Fishing – The Indian Ocean has some of the richest fishing grounds in the world. A day out in the deep will long be remembered. Out in the warm water currents, you will see a lot of varied birdlife and possibly also seals, whales and dolphins. The view of the Cape Peninsula from the sea is well worth the trip.
Hiking and Climbing – The Cape has many hiking routes. With qualified mountain guides you can be assured of excellent and safe adventures. For those looking for additional excitement, be it rock climbing, canyoning and kloofing, this too can be arranged.
Shark Cage Diving – Few things compare with the adrenaline one feels when being face to face with a Great White shark. These captivating trips to sea to learn and experience the different shark life off the Cape coast are designed to protect and conserve these endangered fish.
Whale Watching Safaris and Marine Eco Tours – South Africa is one of the best destinations worldwide for whale watching. Every year from June to November, Southern Right whales migrate from their icy feeding grounds off Antarctica to the South African coastline. Hermanus near Cape Town is the best place to see whales from the shore. Whale and dolphin watching boat trips operate from Hermanus, Gansbaai and Simonstown.
Ziplining – Cape Canopy Tours operates a guided zipline adventure through the beautiful and dramatic Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve which is a World Heritage Site less than an hour’s drive from Cape Town. One slides along steel cables, past waterfalls, and through deep valleys. There are a number of ziplines operating in South Africa but this particular one has been rated by Trip Advisor as the 2nd best adventure in Africa. Another amazing zipline and gorge swing is at the Victoria Falls.
Helicopter Flips – a helicopter flip in Cape Town is an incredible way to see the beautiful peninsula with its mountains and ocean extending down to Cape Point, from the air. The other best helicopter flip in southern Africa is over the magnificent Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. One can also do helicopter flips in the Okavango Swamps to see the waterways, lagoons and wildlife from the air.
Mountain Bike Adventures – The Cape is a mecca for mountain bikers. Here one can enjoy gentle cycles through vineyards or more challenging rides on our mountain slopes. Cycling is an ideal way to get close to nature. To smell the fynbos and feel the cool sea breezes on your skin. Cape Town is the home of the largest cycle race in the world, the Cape Argus Cycle Tour as well as the prestigious Cape Epic. We can arrange day tours or longer tours if that is your preference.
Hot Air Ballooning – Floating over Africa’s great wilderness areas in a hot air balloon is an experience not to be missed. Seeing the shifting sands of the Namib desert dunes or the great plains of the Serengeti or Masai Mara with their migrating herds or the waterways of the Okavango Delta teaming with wildlife, from the air, is a unique and once in a lifetime experience.
Horseback Safaris – Be it the Okavango Swamps, the Masai Mara, or the Tuli Block, what better way to experience the wildlife and beauty of Africa than from the saddle of a horse. You will be accompanied by knowledgable guides and staff and stay in comfortable accommodation, be it a mobile safari tent or be based at a lodge.
